Anime Expo 2009 Report – Meet the Guests Reception (aka breakfast with Morning Musume)
I’m putting this in a post of it’s own as it’s relatively newsworthy i guess. None of the big fansites with press passes i spoke to got any interviews with Morning Musume at all, so does this make my little post here an “exclusive”, lol? (don’t expect any sort of professional interview here, i was just a nervous fanboy)

Got up early, went to the meeting room in the hotel Morning Musume were staying at. When they all arrived we started waving at them, they were just kinda randomly waving at everyone, then Koharu saw me and done a double take just before going into the room, lol. Don’t know if was simply because she saw a fan of hers or because she noticed something i was wearing (had the Naa-san plushie attached to me, along with the star tambourine and the Kohha~ badge).
We get let into the room, get told there’s absolutely no recording/photo’s allowed of any kind, I make my way over to the Morning Musume table (oh btw, most of the other AX guests of honour were in the room too). LinLin notices my Naa-san plushie first, then Koharu does, they keep looking at me and smiling, but i didn’t get onto their table first time (basically everyone spent 15 minutes at a table then swapped around).
So I ended up sitting on the next nearest table, one of the American voice actresses (Kari Wahlgren). She totally knew we were just there to see Morning Musume, but was like “Oh, i don’t mind, go ahead, stare away at them!”, she was kinda amusing… something about a pole dancing friend.
But anyway, first 15 minutes was up, time to switch tables, dashed over to the table Koharu, LinLin, Ai, JunJun, and Aika were sitting at, but didn’t quite make it in time, Koharu and LinLin were still watching me, lol. Ended up sitting on one of the Gainax guy’s tables for the next 15 minutes, no idea what he said, wasn’t paying attention (sorry!!). And 3rd time lucky, i dashed over and got the seat closest to LinLin and Koharu, much to their delight, lol, they were literally just next to me on the table. Oh, and there was one other guy next to me on this table. So the order on this circle table was (clockwise): Other guy, me, translator, LinLin, Koharu, Ai, JunJun, Aika.
Introductions first, i tell them my name and that i came all the way from England to see them, they all had the standard “sugoi!” response. Koharu recognised the “Kohha~” heart badge thing made from a screencap of OhaStar, lol. And Aika recognised the mushroom i had attached to me as a Kirarin Revolution reference.

The other guy asked a few questions (to which i really can’t remember what he asked or how they answered… sorry). Then Koharu kept trying to get the other guy to stop speaking and get me to speak up, lol.
After informing them i was still nervous, i started asking about that Asa Asamba song from OhaStar that Koharu started singing recently. As soon as she heard me say the song title she said: “Ah! Asa Asamba!” and started singing it and doing the dance in her seat. The other girls on the table laughed.
Got the rest of my question out, and asked whether or not it was going to be released on CD, she started to answer, but one of the Up Front staff whispered something in her ear and then all she responded with was “I don’t know, but i’d like it if it did.” Interpret that however you will, but i reckon there aren’t any finalised details yet, but it may well get released on CD at some point in the future.
(Incedentally, anyone who wants it out on CD, go check out this website:
More questions from the other guy which i forgot. Koharu and LinLin kept saying “relax, relax” to me in English, lol.
They ask me how old i am, i tell them, and then Ai says we’re the same age. Ai and JunJun then say to each other “he’s cute”, lol.
The other guy asks which songs are their favourite, but when it got to Koharu and she said “Mikan”, i instantly blurted out “Ah, boku mo” as that’s pretty much mine too. The other girls all laughed and found it amusing that Koharu has the same taste in songs as her fan, lol.
At that point Aika asked me if i understood Japanese, and i responded back in Japanese: “A little. Japanese is difficult.” LinLin replied with “Yes! Japanese is difficult” (in Japanese).
Koharu keeps prompting me to ask questions, but my mind really was blank, so i just asked whether or not they were jetlagged. They all responded that yes they were yesterday, but they’re all fine today. Aika done a strange pose with her hands together stretched above her head to indicate she was no longer jetlagged, lol.
Then the translator asks me if Koharu was my favourite member (as if it wasn’t obvious, lol), though she somehow translated my response as “I love you”. o.O This resulted in Koharu saying “Me too!!” in English to me, lol. The other girls laughed.
The other guy then asks about whether or not JunJun or LinLin would be getting photobooks, i think they answered saying they’d like to do one. I then asked when Koharu’s next one would be out. She basically responded with “There’s nothing planned yet, but i want to do another one. Please wait for it, it’ll be soon!” To which Ai laughs and says “Soon?” (as there isn’t one planned at the moment, lol).
Then it was time up… 15 minutes had flown by. I get up from my chair, say thankyou and bye to all of the girls, then as i turn around to leave the table Koharu stands up, says “Wait”, then leans over the table and shakes my hand and says thankyou to me before i go.
Just some other random things i noticed during the breakfast…
- Throughout the entire thing both Koharu and LinLin kept staring at me. Gotta admit that LinLin is *VERY* cute up close, i turned away for a couple of seconds and turned back and her face was like a foot away from mine just staring, lol. Her eyes just draw you in.
- Koharu was drinking tea (with the teabag still in the cup, lol).
- JunJun had great sparkling/glittering gold eye makup.
- LinLin’s clothes almost looked like a maid outfit, small black dress with very very cute white ribbons on it and one in her hair.
- Koharu was wearing a white top with a small blanket thing wrapped around her shoulders. Must have been cold i guess.
- The Up Front staff were recording the entire thing.
In total there were 4 rotations of the table (except the 4th one was much shorter than the others), so in total out of the 150 people at the meet the guests reception only 8 people got to sit at the table i was at. I count myself one very very very very very lucky guy.

Although I don’t know much about Morning Musume, that 15 minutes of chat time (without the ‘big names’) must have been amazing!
They sound like very lovely people.

hey there, Lampshade! I had to read your account of what went down even if it did make me insanely jealous. Great report and hopefully we’ll see it all on DVD someday. “Morning Musume in LA”. Had a great time hangin’ with you, Matt, Tom and everyone…still not quite back to reality.

Just remembered something else the other guy asked: “Is there anything you were told not to do while in America.” To which one of them (maybe JunJun) responded: “Don’t eat anything raw.”
And also, this is a picture of LinLin wearing that dress I said sort of looked like a maid outfit (picture taken from Mari Yaguchi’s blog, not at AX):

Awesome! At least someone got on the inside and can share the experience. Had it been me I would have probably dropped dead from a stroke or heart attack anyway.
